I’m on a journey to figure out who I am and what my long-term goals are…The C in content is Chaos, as well as Clarity… — Akinkunmi

It is beyond wholesome to speak with creators who have done so well for themselves and have them share their journey in carving out a niche for themselves.

My conversation with Akinkunmi was even more exciting because this time it wasn’t just about him and his creative business, but also about creating a platform for other creatives. Akinkunmi is a creator of vibrant colours who is daring, passionate, and thriving to create a soft landing for other creatives to leverage and become the creatives of their dreams.

Who is Kunmithecreator?

A confused creator 😂…Well, I say that in my videos but not many people understand why I do. I am on a journey of discovering who I am and what my long-term purpose is. In the mix of it, I creatively provide value for people through the different content media.

Be it, an event (I got a bit serious with it, this year), podcast, video, design, and ideas.

You described yourself as a content or multimedia manager, can you explain what exactly you do or what this role entails?

Oh yeah. I do more managing talents (creatives) for projects and brands. I oversee the production of content for web, social media, and print. Ranging from audio, copywriting, design, printing, video creation and other forms.

This appears to be a lot of work for one person.

The C in content is Chaos 😂 and also clarity.

How did you get started in cinematography?

Funny story that I love to tell😂

On this, I can strongly argue that the camera has always been in my family so it was bound to find me. My grandparents collected cameras as a hobby (from what I’ve heard — I still have about two of them).

Getting started was more of the urge to bring my ideas to life. My imagination is very strong (thanks to my childhood), and I need to bring it to life. I need people to be as fascinated by me as I am by them.

In the quest, I explored many forms of expression and cinematography found me. Around 2018/2019, I purchased a camera and began experimenting with new techniques.

Can you tell me more about the series called Voices?

Oh, this baby. I became interested in sound and how it affects emotion.

As a result, I decided to begin an experiment with Voices. I posted the first episode during the independence period (the Question) to raise awareness or draw attention to things that the average person will likely encounter (either directly or indirectly).

I like to think of it as a way to raise awareness about social issues (I am Pro — Nigeria).

Do you have plans to continue the voice project?

Yes, there are ongoing plans.

I had to enter a work phase immediately after posting the creator’s note. (This was not planned.)

I had to improve my creative process. Because of issues such as gadgets and even thought processes, one episode used to take me three days to edit at a time. However, levels have changed. People should expect better now.

What is Kommunity and what are its goals?

The Kommunity is set up to help creatives discover their purpose and encourage growth. If you’re looking to discover your brand goals, brand purpose and brand alignment, marketing, PR, Publicity, and other related growth tips, you can sign up. At the Kommunity, we aim to create a positive competitive market that also encourages creatives to network with other creatives around the world.

So here’s the backstory; When I was in university, I used to host a creative house called Dawihub.
I used my influence to assist other creatives in experimenting.
So I’d see creatives on campus eager to try their hand at photography or cinematography, but there’s no gadget, no muse, no mentor. I’d make an agreement with a studio house to use their resources for free, then assist the creatives in getting to the studio. I also fix what needs to be fixed and help bring it to a wider audience. I used to be popular and resourceful on campus, so I made a lot of progress with it. Even hosted owned events with over 1500 guests, the majority of whom were students.

So kommunity was coined after graduation right?

Kommunity was coined a few months ago. From Dawihub (on campus) to my podcast BACSucks (Being a creative suck), the idea has always been there.

So, are running everything concurrently?

Dawihub has been halted, and the concept is being reworked to achieve its goal. The Kommunity will be available in October. BACsucks will be used to increase the value of the Kommunity. So, to answer your question, no. But one step at a time till they can all compliment each other.

Which of your projects do you consider mind-blowing or your favourite?

I think Kommunity will be mind-blowing.😂 Scratch that, I know Kommunity will be mind-blowing.

My favourite is Dawihub. Because I started it when I had almost zero experience. I still haven’t gotten over the Ibadan music festival🤭.

What steps did you take to carve out a niche for your creative business?

So, over the last 5 years, I’ve worked as a content writer, a Twitter influencer, a WhatsApp influencer, a graphic designer, a cinematographer, and now a content/multimedia manager I can say that these three pain points/steps have been explored every time:

1. Discovering my Purpose.

2. Understanding how I can provide high-quality services

3. Highlight how I can create an experience.

what’s your perspective on money as a creative business owner?

As a creative, collect your money 😂…

To be honest, I see money as a tool but never a determining factor. As a budding creative, I never see money as a motivator (primarily because I am a privileged child), but it is critical for creative development.

How do you use Fidia?

I just got started with Fidia. Started with it being a mini portfolio. Linking my YouTube videos, linking my tweets, and uploading projects with briefs and playlists. Then, the newsletter feature to build my email list. My current favourite is the “buy me a lollipop” feature 😂. I haven’t launched my fidia profile yet because I won’t be ready for the Kommunity launch until October.

So do you have any other favourite features on Fidia?

Erm…To be honest, it’s the “embed” feature. The fact that I can embed playlists, tweets, YouTube videos and the likes just make it perfect. Then the other favourite is the “buy me a lollipop feature”.

So, Akinkunmi any final words for those interested in cinematography or owning a creative business like yours?

Well, fill up your bin of possibilities (build your thought process). There are many creatives out there — the ones with years of experience and net(worth)work. The only way to be visible is to create stuff they can admire. Also, remember to be in the process, and enjoy the process.
